It is a beautiful statement and sure it touches many of us, but why and why are we often not voices but echos???
We all are copy monkeys, I guess it helps to acknowledge this. Still the question is are we doing what we do consciously or unconsciously and are there behaviours we copy, that we rather wouldn’t copy?
The world is always changing by pioneers leading in a dircetion that others than consider better than what is and so change happens with the 1000 monkey system.
Even in micro bacterial life there are only about 20 % of bacterias with an opinion, the rest of the bacteria will follow the leader. It’s not just us humans 😉
BTW there is biotechnology to restrengthen abused soils and regenerate water systems using exactly this principal. More info here: https://www.emrojapan.com/
But why is that like this? And how can we become more voice rather than echo?
Pondering and observing live is always a good start.
Lets talk about the brain. Starting with the reptilian brain. In our brain are survival instincts and they act out of a program that is hard wired. Some call it the Ego – I think reptilian brain is a better name, as it hits the nail on the spot and makes you understand that it’s not a choice you take or not take. The reptilian brain has all that we need to survive and we can be so glad we have that part.
However it’s not all our brain can do, we have other parts, the mammal brain that has to do with all that stuff we feel. Yes we also have feelings 🙂
And than we humans have this part called the neo cortex! Yes we are not just mammals!
My favourite question for whats the difference between an animal and a human is: Do you think any mammal ever thinks about the meaning of live??
Mammals feel, no doubt! But there is an ovious difference which I like to acknowledge!
So than we have a big brain – lets make the most out of it 😉
In the reptilian brain is a responds system to situations. In general the copy effect comes out of a safety program. As long as we copy the ones before us we are safe! They survived, so will we!
That means doing it different is already a tread to our reptilian brain! (you may replace reptilian brain with ego if it helps you understand 😉
Now the mammal brain is what connects us to our emotional system and here we function with feelings. Simplified we could say: when it hurts more to stay like you are, than to risk change, than you will move. That’s how nature works in the mammal brain.
But because we are so clever we have actually developed a lot of systems that experiment with our emotions. Like creating the believe that crying is unnecessary or weak. That shouting needs to be controlled and angry people are bad. That we may be in control and suppress feelings like envy, hate, jealousy etc…..All perfectly normal feelings that we NEED to emotionally develop! Once they are suppressed we are STUCK!
I know it’s a bit of a far take on the whole subject, but I love this theme 🙂
So back to the “voice not an echo”, the reptilian brain is only on survival mode if the emotional development hasn’t happened.
Let me give you an example: If you want to go out in life and follow your dreams but maybe your parents didn’t do that, than your brain will tell you this is dangerous.
Still if you get (your needs met) the support whilst growing up to be who you are fully no matter how far your parents made it, than there is a good chance that you haven’t got the survival mode active.
But there is a good chance that this dod not happen. So if that is the case you can start giving yourself the support now.
Understanding that someone doesn’t move (towards happiness, success, health etc) because of what happened to the ones before us is very important as it will help you to make decisions.
However every logical decision needs to be accompanied with emotional authenticity not just and idea that is unsupported and still in pain of an undeveloped emotion.
I guess it’s all some sort of holy trinity with these main brain parts.
Hope you enjoyed my short diving into it coming from this angle .
Have a great day
